Moving North and Shooting an A2

Postby Bjones 0715 » Thu Sep 10, 2015 5:39 pm

I'll be moving to the Providence area ( but not in the city) and I am looking for a good, safe range for shooting my A2. I just about got what I want and just orderd this on Monday http://www.armil-spec.com/OD-Magpul-A2-Kit-w-BCG-Chrome-Lined-p/arm-2056.htm and it would kill me to not be able to shoot it. Any suggestion?

Here's a list. There might be a couple more.

As far as public ranges, there are 1.5 indoor locations in the state for you to consider:

1. Midstate Gun Company, Coventry - a nice 25yd indoor range with all the modern amenities.
2. Sakonnet River, Tiverton - opening this fall, a new indoor range supplied by Action Targets, so it should be pretty good.

There are clubs you could join, one comes to mind with open membership, Wallum Lake in Burrillville. This is a very nice place, but a little out of the geographic mainstream for most people.

Also Tiverton Rod and Gun may have open membership. There are a couple of members here who should be able to provide more info.

Most / all of the other clubs I know of have a membership waiting list or no openings at all.

Hope that helps.

Tiverton has open membership. They have by far the nicest facilities and have spent well over a million dollars in the last few years just on getting a state of the art outdoor (200 yards) and indoor (25yards) range. There is a video on their website of the facilities.

The bad news about Tiverton is that they have some rather strict rules that I don't like such as no 'rapid fire' (more than 1 shot per second) and no drawing from a holster. I think the rules in Wallum at least allows 'rapid fire', but I don't know about drawing from the holster. I am sure there are some here that could confirm that. As n1bsbri said, it is difficult to get into many clubs and it can take years to become a member. Many clubs also require "work parties" (8-12 first year) before you can become a regular member.

Wallum has a "no rapid fire" police on the outdoor Rifle/pistol range. The pistol pits where the steel is located does not. (Knocking down the plates as fast as possible is the objective after all.). Drawing from a holster is also OK up in the pits.
