Myth: 40% of guns are sold without a background check

Postby newportri » Thu Jan 07, 2016 3:13 pm

Thought this was a good explanation of this myth:

More important, the number comes from a 251-person survey on gun sales two decades ago, early in the Clinton administration. More than three-quarters of the survey covered sales before the Brady Act instituted mandatory federal background checks on February 28, 1994. In addition, guns are not sold in the same way today that they were sold two decades ago.

My anti-gun friends over to quote this myth. I have to explain it to them every single tie, and even with the information being given to them, they still reply with, "well, it still highlights an issue." The fact that they think outdated statistics highlights an issue is a clear indicator of the dangerously simple minds we as gun owners are up against. Sometimes it is the simple mind that is hardest to teach.....

I think anti-gunners also look at permit holders who don't need a NICS approval. I've probably purchased 7 or 8 guns without a check, but people will ignore the fact I could only do that after being fingerprinted, photographed, and having a state and federal background check.

Yeah, but I believe that only applies to States (13 I believe) that have agreed to serve as POC for NICS, right?

That is a whole lot of sales by legally eligible buyers that are skewing the numbers.

Arizona (concealed weapons permits)

You're looking at something different. This is a map of the states who have agreed to be NICS POCs (Points of Contact). What the other chart is for is the permanent Brady permit process for NICS:

Hmm, I thought they were essentially the same, but I was wrong about that.

I got this interesting gem from Cicillini: https://iqconnect.lmhostediq.com/iqextr ... 8&c=RI01DC
Dispelling Myths About Gun Violence

Right now in our country there are far too many myths about gun violence, so this week I took to my Facebook page to correct the record on some false information being shared widely. Today, let’s look at the myth that President Obama’s executive actions go against the will of the American people. On January 3rd, conservative radio host Laura Ingraham said, “The 90 percent statistic of supporting background checks, that’s been debunked.”

Here are the facts: Every single national poll in 2015 found overwhelming support for expanding background checks on gun sales. In December, Quinnipiac found 89% of Americans support, 9% oppose. In October, CBS/New York Times found 92% of Americans favor, 7% oppose. That same month, Gallup found 86% of Americans support, 12% oppose. In July, Pew found 85% of Americans support, 13% oppose. And a PPP poll of GUN OWNERS found that 83% support expanding background checks, while only 14% oppose. The facts are clear: Americans overwhelmingly support expanding background checks on gun sales.
