Postby newportri » Sun Mar 15, 2015 4:52 am

Someone intercepted the following email that is probably going around to all school districts:
Dear Members of the Smithfield School Committee,
As you may know, RI Coalition Against Gun Violence is supporting House Bill 5861 (NO GUNS IN SCHOOLS (NGIS)). We invite the Smithfield School Committee to join with other members of the RI education community in support of this common-sense legislation to help keep our children safe. This bill has been reviewed, considered and verbally approved by:
RI Education Leadership (confirmation with related Boards pending) including:
Tim Duffy of RI Association of School Committees
Tim Ryan of RI Association of Superintendents
Joseph Crowley or RI Association of Principals
Patrick Crowley (Bob Walsh) (succeeded by Ray Sullivan who is working on gaining approval to support) of the National Education Association of RI
Jim Parisi of the American Federation of Teachers
Steve Ardelli of RI Charter Schools (18 of the 21 Charter Schools).
More information on the proposed bill can be found here: https://legiscan.com/RI/text/H5861/2015

Does anyone have any information to whether their school district has received a similar letter?

One more piece of "common sense" legislation that lacks common sense. This is also on their homepage, looks like they are getting up on their soap box once again.
