Warwick Concealed Carry - Support Needed!

Postby mossberg500 » Tue Dec 09, 2014 4:22 am

Councilwoman Camille Vella-Wilkinson is pushing to change the way Warwick reviews and issues CCW permits. Right now, the Board of Public safety (Warwick's CCW issuing authority) is blocking just about all permits with the exception of well-documented work permits. In addition, they are not following RI law and pertinent case law in issuing their denials.

We need a strong showing at city council meetings while this is being worked through!

The second city council meeting of each month has open microphone time for residents to voice concerns. Please consider coming in support of your gun rights! If you cannot make it, please writhe, call, or e-mail your city councilperson in support!

The next open Mic meeting is December 15th at 7pm. It is best to contact your councilperson and let them know you wish to speak.

There are others in the city that feel that there are "more pressing issues". Lets show them that protecting the 2nd Amendment is a PRESSING ISSUE!

Warwick City Hall
City Council Chambers
3275 Post Rd, Warwick, RI 02886

Please cross-post this to Facebook, other forums, or anywhere we may garner support!

Welcome to the forum, I see you have contributed to the Warwick thread about this. (incase anyone needs a quick reference: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=259)

I might not be the most articulated on here to properly publicly speaking about this, for that, I would refer to NewportRI.

mossberg, could you summarize anything missing from the other thread, key issues on the denial such as how/why/when you were denied so others that plan on attending draft talking points. If I can get away from the house for one night, I will attend and speak (having a newborn makes it tough).

Thanks for posting and I will send out an email as well as post on our Facebook page. Can you add the room and address of City hall (to the OP) for those who have not been there before.
The main person driving this is not active with RIFOL, although he is a registered member, but he is very knowledgeable about the issues in Warwick and has been dealing with it since 2007. He is the person who got in contact with Camille and has talked to her about this issue and decided to do something about it. I've had some discussions with the person driving this, and he is looking for people who:
1. Have been denied a permit even though all statutory requirements were met.
2. Were offered to withdraw their application because they would be denied.
3. Were told (by the Board of Public Safety or some other Warwick official involved with the permitting process) they would be denied and therefore did not apply.

At the last council meeting when the permit fee was dropped, only two people showed up... Hopefully more Warwick residents who fall in one of the categories above will attend this time. From previous experience, plenty of people are willing to complain about the permitting process in Warwick (and RI), but few are willing to do something about it. Fortunately, there are people like mossberg500 who are willing to do something about it and hopefully we can get some changes in Warwick. Feel free to spread the word to everyone in Warwick (friends, gun clubs, FFLs, etc.) and let them know there is a great opportunity to make progress in Warwick with regards to CCW.

And to add to newportri's comments, it is possible to get a large turnout for support of a local issue. This was done in Exeter when they were dealing with their town council. Also recently in Tiverton regarding the shooting range ordinance. But you can only go to that level a limited number of times. It's best if the events are planned for maximum effect. You can't expect a large number of out of town people to stay involved on a weekly basis on a local issue.

The biggest impact will come from Warwick residents who fit into one of the categories newportri listed. Personal outreach from each of them to their council people helps a lot, and their attendance and testimony at the council meetings and hearings. Elected officials pay attention to their constituents, out-of-towners not so much.

If you cannot make it, at least contact Camille and let her know that you were not able to get a permit.

Even if you were "convinced" to withdraw your application by the Warwick board of public safety!

These are as important as denials since they are de facto denials, but with the added twist of the Board avoiding any potential judicial review of their decision by "benevolently" allowing the applicant to withdraw their application rather than be denied. The more of these stories that are heard, the better. This is how 64% of applications ended up during the last pistol permit study, and it's a disgusting abuse of the Board's power.

I wasn't able to attend, but I talked to Speedie afterwards. The meeting went well and the message was given and this is just the beginning. Unfortunately, not a lot of people showed up, but hopefully there will be some improvements in the near future.
