Pistol?? Permit

Postby shovel1966 » Sat Jun 13, 2015 2:43 pm

With the clear and detailed definitions contained in the General Laws of Rhode Island concerning "Handguns, Pistols, and Revolvers," why do you think Rhode Island calls their permit "PISTOL PERMIT?" Could this be to discourage concealed carry of revolvers? Or are revolvers actually forbidden from being carried in RI? Or could it be that the state doesn't tie everything together and they meant to call it "Handgun Permit" and just called it "Pistol Permit" instead?

11-47-11 says:
11-47-11 License or permit to carry concealed pistol or revolver.

What the licensing authorities calls it is not important in my opinion.
....the right to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

That clears things up, Newportri. I still find it odd that the state goes through great lengths to clearly define each term in the law and then use the incorrect term printed on the license itself.

Mine from Portsmouth says PISTOL PERMIT in big all caps letters across the top. I understand they are issued under different authority, but I would have thought that they all be the same within the state. Hmmm..
