Powder for .308Win

Postby shovel1966 » Wed Mar 19, 2014 8:44 am

I have only loaded .308Win with Varget and have had a tough time finding some here lately. During my last trip to Heritage, Dave recommended I try Benchmark. I bought one pound and have been busy with work and haven't tried it yet. I am just wondering what other powders you guys have good luck with in .308 with 147gr-168gr.

I've been using H4895 with great results. I generally use 168gr SMK.

One way to explore what powders work in .308 is to look on the manufacturer's load data web sites. You can find them for Hodgdon/IMR/Winchester, Alliant, and others.

4895 is good stuff... I left out the "H" or "IMR" because they are both good. IMR4064 is another one, lots of Garand Guy's swear by it for 30-06 and have seen it used in a lot of .308 accuracy loads while searching around.

I do remember people saying that H4895 meters real good because of the smaller grains of the powder.

Unfortunately, I can't find any of the good powders... way too scarce!
